Okay, this is the second in the Alegría series that I'm writing for September challenge. I started this slice for my next prompt, then discovered it fitted better with another prompt from earlier in the month. I've used the prompt, but not listed it as the day for it has passed. Also, I'm going sequentially in the series. Prompt-date-wise this piece would come before my first piece. Even though it's second. I hate that.
Title: Koi no Yokan
Prompt: Koi no Yokan (Japanese) – The sense upon first meeting someone that the two of you are going to fall into love (not the same as love at first sight)
Summary: He wasn’t expecting it, but this may be the one to provide his Tethers.
Walking into the Praxus Headquarters of the Enforcers, Jazz kept a smile on his face even as he hoped that this time he’d found his place. It wasn’t easy being a perpetual nomad – Polyhex, where he’d transferred from, was only the latest in a long line of cities he’d inhabited. Though it was probably the only one where he’d actually completed a stage of schooling. And started his career. In fact, Polyhex was probably the only city he’d settled in for any real length of time.
His parents had been wanderers, with the only constant being the music they made their living teaching and performing. This lack of ties deeply disconcerted Jazz, with him hating every move to a new city, with new people. It had taken a long time for him to settle at the Academy in Polyhex. He’d shocked his creators and friends when he’d chosen the Enforcer track 20 vorns ago. More so, when, despite a late start, he’d stayed with it and moved up the ranks quite quickly.
He’d kept his copperflutter façade – his social abilities had smoothed his way into his current position. Some might argue that he’d cheated to get where he was, but Jazz knew how hard he’d worked. More importantly, so did his superiors. But that lack of recognition from many of his peers compounded with his own insecurities to the point that Jazz greatly feared that he’d never find true, permanent tethers.
A frown wrinkled his browplate at the direction of his thoughts, before being smoothed away. Yes, he wanted roots. However, living the way he had did have some pluses to it. Having to make new friends with every change of cityscape meant Jazz had a large network of informants, friends and favours to draw on, from all over Cybertron and from all walks of life (not all of them legal).
It was still no substitute for a place of his own to belong to.
Praxus was one city he’d never been to – his creators had come here before his sparking, and they never returned to a place they’d already been. They were currently off-world somewhere, though Jazz had lost track of them on Calyx. Now, in this city for the first time, Jazz couldn’t help but hope.
During his ruminations, Jazz had managed to arrive at the office he’d be sharing from now on. Eyeing the silhouette of his soon-to-be partner, a momentary tremble in his spark drew his attention. Then the shade moved, and the door opened. A tall black and white frame, augmented by the sensory wings so common here in Praxus, beckoned him in.
“You must be Jazz.” the mech stated. A discrete brush of an EM field accompanied the rather flat greeting. Jazz hid his surprise immediately – the mech’s field was just barely tinted with caution, resignation, and a tiny amount of hope – not at all what he’d expected.
“Yeh. That’d be meh.” He winced. Of all times for his accent to make an appearance!
His partner gazed at him inscrutably. Then, a small smile crept across his faceplate. “I think this might actually work. My name is Prowl.”
Jazz looked at him thoughtfully. He’d heard the rumours, even in Polyhex, of this cold, tight-aft, stiff, standoffish officer. Going by first appearances, it was pretty accurate. But Jazz knew how to look deeper, and what he saw, he definitely liked.
And… there was something more. Jazz knew to listen to his instincts, and what they were telling him right now was strange. This mech, Prowl, with that beautiful smile, small though it was, could be his mate. His match. The anchor in the storm of his life.
It wasn’t love yet. But it would be.
