Drive-by post, Meme

Sorry for not posting. My family has just bought a house, and I'm the only member of the full-time renovation crew. It's not even halfway done. And we move next Wednesday.

The carpets have had to be delayed until next month.

Once we're settled in, then I will post the fics that are (over)due.

Mindless entertainment: Snagged from [livejournal.com profile] camfield

Your result for The Golden Compass Daemon Test...

Independent Soul.

You are calm and logical, but not unemotional. You are an introvert, at heart, preferring to read alone than be subjected to the crush and noise of a big party or bar. You have a few friends and family, whose presence you welcome - to a point. Even they can wear on your nerves eventually, and you need to retreat back into your personal space for a while so you can recharge. Your energy comes in bursts, after which you need a long nap or a couple of evenings at home to recuperate.

You are comfortable with yourself, and reasonably confident. You want the friendship and goodwill of others, but you are not willing to sacrifice your principles in order to get it. If your close friends need something that you can provide, however, you will be the first to offer it.

You are a good and sympathetic listener, and are aware of your friend's emotional states. With your very close friends, you will open up, but rarely - you don't like to burden people with your problems. At the same time, though, you are honest and are not willing to alter the truth for the sake of convenience. Among strangers you are reserved, and may resort to making jokes to disguise your true feelings.

While you are not afraid of conflict, you do not seek it, either. When you are hurt or insulted, you feel that you have a choice to make. You can choose to take the up on it and defend yourself, or you can let it pass. Your decision may depend on how well you know the person, how personally you take the insult, or simply what mood you are in that day. Your friends may not always know how you are going to react, for that reason. Whatever you reaction, though, you will be logical, rational and unnervingly accurate: a measured strike.

Your daemon's form would represent your calm, introverted nature, your cool logic, and your impatience with crowds of people. He or she would probably whisper ironic comments in your ear, give logical advice and try to hide his or her soft side from everyone, even you.

Suggested forms:
Peregrine Falcon, Snowy Owl, Snow Leopard, Siberian Tiger, Osprey.

Second in Alegría series

Okay, this is the second in the Alegría series that I'm writing for September challenge. I started this slice for my next prompt, then discovered it fitted better with another prompt from earlier in the month. I've used the prompt, but not listed it as the day for it has passed. Also, I'm going sequentially in the series. Prompt-date-wise this piece would come before my first piece. Even though it's second. I hate that.

Title:
Koi no Yokan

I live 15 minutes by car from an indoor ski place called Snowplanet. So, after living at my current home for 6 years, today I went skiing for the first time.

[livejournal.com profile] satsuki_samurai came with me, and acted as an unofficial ski-instructor. She's been doing this since she could walk steadily; me, not so much. I was very grateful for her help - I went down on my ass three times in the first 15 minutes on the slope.

Though, that stage didn't last long. I'm just happy that I didn't foul my skis, end up in a man-sized snowball, or break an ankle.

After about 4 hours or so, I was skiing a lot better. I went from no-experience-whatsoever to making turns without falling, so I'm plenty pleased. But I do think my ankles hate me.

Satsuki and I spent the last half-hour or so tobogganing on canvas and plastic covered inner-tubes. Best activity EVAR.

I think I want to go skiing again. Though not until the school-holiday-rush is over.

Pick-me-up for Camfield

[livejournal.com profile] camfield has had a bit of a scare - a lady has threatened for the second time to take her daughter away. So I thought I'd do something to make her feel better. The result - a sketch now up on my deviant art account. I think I'll be doing a second one as a follow up, with similar subject matter. See my links for my dA account.

Comment to this post, and I will list seven things I want you to talk about. They might make sense or they might be totally random. Then post that list, with your commentary, to your journal. Other people can get lists from you, and the meme merrily perpetuates itself.

1. What is your favourite colour and why?
Uh...probably blue. Any shade of blue really, from the lightest of cyans to a gorgeous almost-black navy. Though I like greens, purples, yellows, peach, black, silvers, and white/creams. Why? No slagging clue, other than that these hues resonate with me...

2. Diamonds or Pearls?
Neither. Sapphire or Opal all the way. Though Amethyst is a favoured stone too.

3. Have there been any books that have changed some aspect of your life?
When I first discovered meditation. Reading manga. Oh! When I first read Rudyard Kipling, David Eddings and Anne McCaffrey - they were my first major introduction to fantasy and sci-fi, I must have been about 6-7 when I started reading them. "Just so Stories" is still on my list of top ten favourites. T.S.Elliot - my first introduction to proper humorous poetry. None of this Dr. Suess-style stuff. Proper poetry.

4. What is the worst food you have ever eaten?
I once had an unfortunate encounter with an improperly cooked mackerel. It has forever soured my perspective on whole fish. I also don't like foods that are spice-ridden all that much - mild curries are fine, but you won't get me within 20metres of a vindaloo.

5. Which do you value more, honesty or courage?
Honesty. If you are not honest with yourself, you cannot be honest with others. Also, by its very nature, honesty requires courage - the ability to look within and see the truth, to ignore any lies is a very difficult one. Courage is needed to both brush aside the veil, and see what we very often don't want to see. It has been said "something that has long been thought often has the appearance of  being right, even after it is proven wrong". And the most dangerous liars are those that acknowledge the truth, lie anyway and carry it off.

6. Favouite song?
Augh. -_- You had to ask this one. I don't fragging know! I know so many songs, many off-by-heart, that I can't really tell. Some are very beautiful, but situationally appropriate, some are sing-whenever-wherever, and some are just instrumentals. I suppose it shows a part of our spirit as a species - the ability to create music, to resonate with others through sound and not speech.

7. If you had the opportunity to learn another language, which would it be?
I'm a linguophile. What does that tell you? I already speak Japanese and German with some fluency; a little Spanish, French, and Latin; I'm attempting Russian and Mandarin Chinese this year. I should really look at Gaelic, Ancient Egyptian, Ancient Greek, but it will probably be Arabic and Aramaic next...

They're up!

Sketches for [livejournal.com profile] renegadewriter8 are up on my deviant art - see my links for easy access.
Only one sketch yet to go up; the subject is being stubborn, but I'll wrestle it into submission yet! *determined glare*

Given my current schedule, the paintings should be complete sometime in March or April. *sigh* What a nuisance... Oh well, at least progress has been made.

IQ test - are you a logical thinker?

You know all those IQ tests people do? Dad just showed this to me. Don't read any further until you've watched it. ALL THE WAY THROUGH, PEOPLE!

It is surprising how many people would not understand how those answers are reached, and would sit there going "Buh... wha... huh?"

In any event, it had better be a pretty enormous fridge. (spoiler, highlight to see)

I have a grin on my face that I can't get rid of. XD

First foray into crackfic - thanks, ante_luce!

So, I was rereading a favoured author's works this evening, and was inspired to write fic. The 'verse in question is a crack-based one that was itself inspired by ajremix's Destruction'verse. The icons also didn't help (or maybe they did, depends on how you look at things).

Destruction'verse can be found here.
Fairy Godmech'verse can be found here and here. Icons scattered on [livejournal.com profile] ante_luce's journal.

Resulting ficlet:

Swoop was roaring in the background. First Aid was struggling to hold in laughter. Ratchet himself had a huge slag-eating grin on his face.
"Do yah think he migh' have learned 'is lesson, Doc?" asked Jazz, smothering a grin.
"It's a distinct possibility; you never know with the twins, Sideswipe in particular..." Ratchet replied, still grinning. "In any event, I think we're going to need Wheeljack if we're ever going to get them back to normal."
Everyone's eyes were drawn to the mechs in question.
*pop*
"Well, now they know that Prowl can, and will, follow through on his magical threats. Shame about the pink toast though" said Spike, muffling a snicker.
*pop*
If ever a 'bot could look pathetic, these two managed quite nicely.
"Still. Prowl, did you really have to turn the twins into that?"
"Sorry, Prime. But they did mess with the quarterly reports from Cybertron. It'll take at least three cycles to sort everything out."
Prime winced. At least he knew now that the transfiguration was warranted.
*pop* *pop*

*********************************
"He did WHAT! Oh, this is priceless!"
"I quite agree, Lord Megatron. This is indeed an... interesting situation."
"Say it for what it is, Soundwave. It's fragging hilarious!"
"For once I agree with you, Starscream. Those thrice-damned Pit-spawn twins have finally got their due. However..."
The pair stilled.
"...I'm curious as to how that SiC of theirs managed to change them into frog-shaped toasters."

End.

Disclaimer: I'm just playing with already established characters; and another couple of fans' 'verses. *is amused*

Christmas projects

So, in my last post I made mention of [livejournal.com profile] renegadewriter8 and their wishlist, from which I created my own.

Since I'm feeling in a better headspace this Christmas, I decided to play elf for one of their requests. As such, I've started work on a painting of a dragon. The final piece will actually be part of a triptych set. However only the first sketch is complete. It'll be going up on my Dev.art account probably tomorrow. The next two sketches should be complete after Christmas, with the paintings following shortly after. The finished paintings won't be going up until all are done, after which I'll post them to RW8.

This present has so inspired me, I'm planning to complete a couple of mini diptychs, and will be gifting them to my mum as one of her presents.
Nothing says "You're loved/liked/wanted" like a homemade gift.

I'm feeling really good right now.

In other projects, I still need to finish knitting my scarf/wrap, finish sewing my Kanzeon(Saiyuki) cosplay, and at long last start on my kimono.

[livejournal.com profile] satsuki_samurai's skirt that I'm modifying is gonna be a piece of cake - the only hard part is getting her in for a fitting.

Speaking of knitting - does anyone else find that it's a mindless, soothing task? Almost meditative?

Going back to gifts and presents I'd like - I recently remembered about the Alienware Laptops and PC's I saw in JB Hi-Fi....I WANT ONE!!!!!!!!!!
It'd be perfect for PC gaming - plenty of graphics-devoted hardware, a substantial HD and RAM for storage and active games, Augh, it's just PERFECT - and I'd finally be able to play WoW without worrying about it being too Graphics-heavy or not having enough diskspace.
